Summer is finally here and I hope you are enjoying it. 🌞 Regardless of whether you are sunbathing on the beach, enjoying your coffee and relaxing, or whether you are at work, I bring you something interesting to read. Find out what happened in the past months in our world of nature protection.🌱
We are saying no to the harmful plastic waste!
Did you know that summer visits by tourists cause 40% more plastic in the Mediterranean? In order to encourage people to think about their own habits, especially during the summer season, we set up an exhibition in Poreč with photographs of nature whose beauty and functionality are threatened by plastic pollution. The exhibition was opened on World Environment Day and was set up from June 5 to 30 in cooperation with the Usluga Poreč and the Open University Poreč. 🌊

The unusual scene in the capital of Croatia
A bear carcass had appeared in the center of Zagreb in Croatia. Of course, not the real one, but the real movie-like crime scene of a poached bear as a symbol of all animals threatened with wildlife crimes. 🆘

What actually happened there? Find out here!

What would the animals say if we gave them the voice?
The bear carcass was actually just an overture to three audio monodramas we have produced with famous actors, actresses, musicians and producers. Each monodrama gives voice to one animal that talks about a terrible crime that left irreversible consequences on it. 🐾 Unfortunately, it is still only in Croatian language, but if you by any chance understand Croatian, you can find them on the link below.

Hear three stories from the perspective of a bear, an eagle and sea cucumber.

And what do journalists think about wildlife crime?
For the journalists from Serbia who are dedicated to wildlife crime reporting, we organized a three day trip to show how poachers find a way to break law and avoid legal consequences. ❌ Journalists spoke with the guardians on The Tamis river about various poaching methods and how they catch perpetrators. Journalists have seen how seized tools are destroyed and how animals seized and saved because of some form of wildlife crime are treated in Palić Zoo before their release, if that is possible.
We have got three more Panda Junior winning green ideas
WWF Adria hosted three more Just Transition hackathons for high school and university students in Serbia. More than 50 participants turn their ideas into sustainable projects for local communities and for the purpose of a healthy environment. Winning ideas are about composting in the cities, collecting and processing rainwater and then reusing it and developing sustainable river restaurant.

Three winning teams had the opportunity to present their ideas along with their colleagues from North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria at a regional conference in Skopje.

You can find out more about hackathons and winning ideas here.

Our project was awarded with the MakeEUBlue award!
MakeEUBlue Awards celebrate the progress in ocean literacy in Europe. The Awards aim to raise awareness about the seas’ importance and encourage ocean literacy initiatives with long-term value.

We are proud to say that out MedBycatch project, in which WWF jointly with partners collected information on bycatch of vulnerable and engangered species in Mediterranean fisheries, is one of the winners of the award.

Celebrations of Europe Day in Ljubljana
Just over a year ago, the pan-European initiative called the European Climate Pact was established, bringing various activities to Slovenia in recent months. We, as the project coordinator for Slovenia, participated in the Europe Day celebration event, aimed at engaging all generations in the areas of sustainable mobility and energy use. We have in Ljubljana, Slovenia, addressed all attendees and passers-by with artistic lightboxes showcasing the consequences of climate change. Throughout the day, there were creative workshops, experiments, discussions, music, entertainment, and sports for all generations. The themes of this year’s Europe Day celebration were the green transformation of Europe and the European Year of Skills. The event was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, and the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
